Professional Development Residency
Monday 16th – Friday 20th December 2019
DanceEast | Ipswich | Suffolk
Join us in Ipswich for a five-day intensive for applicants aged 18 and over who are currently in, or recently graduated from (within 3 years), higher education - run by two of Gecko’s ensemble members.
WHAT IS IT? This training opportunity allows aspiring and newly professional performers to delve into the world of Gecko and to learn about the company’s approach to physical theatre and devising for performance. It is an opportunity to gain an insight into the creative process our devising performers go through when creating a show.
WHAT WILL I BE DOING? Through a series of highly physical, dynamic workshops, you will focus on methods for creating movement for performance and use breath to explore emotions, expanding your creative tool-kits. Participants will be nurtured and challenged in their artistic decision-making and performance skills, coming together to create a short ensemble piece at the end of the intensive.
WHAT WILL I GAIN FROM IT? An insight into Gecko’s creation process as well as tools and advice for devising and performing that you can use in your own practice.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? Places cost £390 (VAT inclusive). Participants will need to arrange their own travel and accommodation.
HOW DO I APPLY FOR A PLACE? Participants must be aged 18 or over, and currently in higher education, or within 3 years of graduating. On this occasion, we won’t be able to accept those who have previously taken part in a Gecko training intensive.
To reserve your place, please email firstname.lastname@example.org with the following information:
A subject line of ‘December Residency Application’*
A copy of your CV (max. 2 pages)
A short paragraph (max. 200 words) detailing why you want to take part in the intensive and how it will influence your training and professional development (and reason for applying for a bursary place, if applicable)
A completed equal opportunity monitoring form (which will be anonymised) - https://bit.ly/2n2kQnw
*Please note, failure to do this may result in your email not being picked up by our automatic system, and therefore your application may not be considered.
Gecko is committed to diversity, inclusion and equality within the arts and welcomes applications from all backgrounds.
ARE THERE ANY BURSARY PLACES AVAILABLE? On this occasion we have reserved a portion of the places on this intensive for those who have previously faced barriers to accessing professional development opportunities due to belonging to a protected characteristic group (according to the 2010 Equalities Act). Successful applicants will be chosen based upon the positive impact this intensive will have upon their career development. Those applying for a bursary must still meet the criteria as stated above. The bursary covers the fee, but participants will still need to arrange their own travel and accommodation. Please state clearly that you are applying for a bursary place when contacting us.
Deadline for bursary applications is Friday 8th November.
We offer two placements a year in the Gecko office for students and young adults who have recently completed compulsory education. These are by application only, and will give successful applicants the opportunity to spend a week working in the busy Gecko office, including learning about finances, operations, participation, marketing and administration.
If you’re interested in learning about the business behind the performances and wish to apply for a placement, please send your CV and a short covering letter to email@example.com. You should outline:
· Why you wish to join the Gecko office
· What you would like to learn from your time with the company
